Watch enthralling theatre this winter

Most of us can agree that cinemas and theatres have always been great destinations if you’re looking for entertainment. With the cold weather creeping in, it feels like the perfect time to hide from winter and attend one of Cape Town’s world class theatres. So, without much further ado, here are our four favourite theatres for you to consider this winter:

The Fugard

The Fugard theatre is named after South Africa’s most significant and internationally acclaimed playwright, Athol Fugard. Located right next to the District Six Museum, the theatre has a reputation to showcase only the greatest international theatre productions. Plays they have brought to Cape Town include Rocky Horror Picture Show, Blood Brothers and their most recent triumph, Funny Girl. Not only that, but it also has a bioscope that screens world-class cinematic masterpieces in a comfortable setting. Due to its prime location, you can either enjoy a drink and some delicious Portuguese cuisine at the Diaz Tavern, or if you’re feeling sweet, you can grab a bite to eat at the famous Charly’s Bakery, which are both right opposite the theatre.

Gate 69

If you’re looking for an experience that you simply won’t find anywhere else, head to Gate 69. South Africa’s premier cabaret theatre opened its doors only last year. You’ll be welcomed personally by your gracious host and main act for the evening before you enter the venue’s private bar area to enjoy a finely crafted cocktail. Once the bell rings, you’ll be escorted to the intimate performance hall that seats 80 - 90 people to experience a jam-packed production that will leave you giggling for the rest of the week. With great food, choreography and comedy at its finest, this is a theatrical experience you won’t want to miss!

Labia Theatre

The Labia Theatre has been one of Cape Town’s greatest cultural experiences since 1949, making it the oldest independent art-repertory cinema in South Africa. It was originally an Italian Embassy ballroom, which became a theatre, and eventually it was transformed into a cinema. It has barely changed over the last 40 years, and offers genuine old-school charm, while they showcase a mix of four modern and alternative films each week.

Cape Town Magic Club

The Cape Town Magic Club is Africa’s premier magic theatre, and one of the latest theatrical additions to hit the streets of Cape Town. It offers you the opportunity to dive into a world of illusion in one of the most beautiful, yet mysterious venues!
